Axiom Space & IndX: Transforming Space Missions

VIDEO

Written by IndX Admin

Axiom Space is on a mission to make space accessible to everyone – pioneering space missions, next-generation spacesuits and the world’s first commercial space station. To achieve this vision, Axiom Space partnered with Engineering Industries eXcellence, Siemens and ATA Engineering to create a connected digital thread, integrating design, manufacturing and sustainment. By leveraging Siemens Teamcenter, Opcenter and Simcenter, they transformed fragmented systems into a unified platform – saving costs, improving efficiency and enabling innovation.

Axiom Space’s mission is to make space more accessible to everyone, for the benefit of everyone. They pursue this through three primary objectives: partnering with other countries and private astronauts for missions to the current International Space Station, developing the next generation of space suits for both low Earth orbit and the lunar surface and building the world’s first commercial space station to replace the ISS when it retires around 2030.
Axiom’s chief digital transformation goal was to create a digital thread – from an idea on a napkin through every design cycle, all the way into manufacturing, production and sustainment. The ability to stitch data together across the lifecycle allows them to leverage insights for future missions and services. As a startup, one of their unique challenges was relying on independent software that solved individual problems. By adopting Siemens’ Teamcenter, Opcenter and Simcenter, Axiom created a single platform that connects this data into a unified digital thread. This transformation has enabled them to leverage data both downstream and upstream, improving efficiency, reducing costs and saving time while ensuring data can be reused later on.
Engineering Industries eXcellence became involved through Siemens’ partner network, complementing ATA Engineering’s expertise with strengths in MES and PLM domains. Together with Siemens, these partners helped Axiom move quickly while avoiding common mistakes in digital rollouts. The first step was to create a roadmap that aligned Axiom’s goals and deadlines with Siemens’ tools, which provided the flexibility and scalability needed for such ambitious projects. A key differentiator was Siemens’ open architecture, which allowed Axiom to integrate with legacy systems instead of replacing everything at once, giving them freedom to adapt and choose the best path forward.
Looking ahead, Axiom Space is excited to leverage its digital thread in new ways, including artificial intelligence and machine learning for predictive maintenance and advanced data analysis. Ensuring the right data is available at the right time unlocks opportunities like generative AI for design optimization and faster simulations. What once took days can now be done in hours, empowering engineers to innovate and accelerate progress toward the next frontier of space exploration.
