About the Customer

Tomorrow’s space breakthroughs begin with today’s digital foundation. IndX is supporting a North American space systems manufacturer that is pushing the boundaries of orbital habitat development and accelerating the future of human activity in space. Our customer designs modular station components that support long duration human presence in low Earth orbit, rapid prototyping cycles and the commercialization of space-based research. Our Digital Engineering specialists were selected to strengthen the customer’s design validation processes, modernize Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) workflows and build the foundations needed for future automation across their engineering ecosystem.

The Customer’s Need

The space station developer is progressing through a significant digitalization roadmap and required stronger foundations to support rapid engineering growth. Their teams needed improved design validation, more consistent PLM workflows and better process automation to minimize engineering rework and accelerate development timelines. These improvements are critical for an organization preparing to scale complex space station programs where quality, speed and repeatability directly influence mission readiness.

Our customer is a key player in the continuing space race and is designing modules that will one day succeed the International Space Station. They are proactively strengthening their digital foundation to support the ambitious demands of orbital habitat development. Rather than waiting for inefficiencies to slow progress, they are modernizing their engineering ecosystem now to accelerate experimentation, reduce design cycle times and position themselves at the forefront of the rapidly expanding commercial space market.

  • Enhance design validation and reduce engineering rework
  • Improve workflow efficiency and release management
  • Establish consistent modeling practices across engineering teams
  • Strengthen PLM foundations for organizational growth
  • Prepare for future inspection and compliance processes

About the Project

For this engagement, our Digital Engineering teams are delivering three coordinated project phases that strengthen the customer’s digital foundation, improve engineering quality and prepare the organization for future automation across its space system development programs.

Phase 1: Siemens NX Checkmate Design Validation

The first phase focuses on giving engineers the ability to detect issues early in the design process. IndX has implemented a suite of twenty Siemens NX Checkmate validation checks that automatically review models for geometry issues, manufacturing constraints and compliance with internal standards. By catching these issues immediately, engineers spend less time reworking designs and can move through release cycles faster. Weekly mentoring sessions ensure that the customer's engineers not only use the checks effectively but also learn how to maintain and expand them in the future.

Phase 2: Siemens Teamcenter Upgrade and Workflow Modernization

The second phase strengthens the customer’s PLM environment. IndX is upgrading the organization to the latest version of Siemens Teamcenter, establishing modern release workflows and improving how engineering data is structured and controlled. These upgrades streamline design reviews, reduce data inconsistency and improve collaboration across teams working on different elements of the orbital habitat program. A stronger PLM foundation also supports traceability and configuration management, both critical for the safety and reliability of space-bound systems.

Phase 3: BCT Inspector Implementation

The final phase enhances the customer’s quality inspection processes. After the Teamcenter upgrade is complete, IndX will enable BCT Inspector, a tool used to generate and manage inspection documentation directly inside PLM. This capability reduces manual data entry, improves accuracy in inspection planning and ensures that quality control data remains connected to the digital thread. The result is a more integrated approach to verification and compliance, essential for hardware destined for space missions.

  • Implemented twenty NX Checkmate rules to automate design validation
  • Mentoring and knowledge transfer for customer engineering staff
  • Teamcenter upgrade with new workflows for design release
  • Preparation for BCT Inspector integration after PLM upgrade
  • Reduced engineering change requests and shorter lead times
